I bought this for the U-styler, and let me say it was no where near worth the $99 I paid. The U-styler does not work the way the video claims it does, and the video that comes with it is NOT helpful. I tried a number of times to get "wavy" hair as the video shows and it just looked like a bad crimping job. It curls decently, but I have a Babyliss curling iron, so there was no need for me to keep a $99 product just for curling.

I was not impressed with the straightener either. I again have a Babyliss straightener (the PRO Porcelain Ceramic BABP2555, which I LOVE!) and that works way better. The Nano does not have a heat setting option, it is just always on 450, which is way too hot and damaging for many hair types. Over all, just not worth the money. Buy a good Babyliss straightener 1 inch curling iron instead and save some money.

After several years of using and loving the Chi, it finally gave out and I needed a new flat iron. I spent a few hours researching flat irons online and in stores to find out what had changed over the years. I talked with my hair stylist, who used the Babyliss PRO Nano Titanium and loves that it heats up to 400+ degrees with options for lower settings and works great on her client's hair, including mine.

Then she told me about the U-Styler that her coworker used. I was intrigued by the idea of a flat iron that could straighten my thick, natually curly hair but also add a bit of curl and style as I often try to use a flat iron to do this anyway. It does a nice job of adding a little curl to my ends. Sometimes I use the U-Styler exclusively for both flat ironing and style. When I saw this pairing, I couldn't resist asking for it as a Christmas gift from my husband.

I also like the pink color and that this is the breast cancer edition. So far, I like the pair of irons very much. I think it is a great deal! It is working as well as the Chi did for about the same price but with the bonus of the U-styler, so I am very happy with this purchase. Excellent value.

But that's just plain wrong!

I mean, seriously, why are men expecting to know something when it was never ever taught to them? That's just as silly as going up to a person on the street and throwing him a bunch of tools and saying "Ok, now here's the tools and there's the material, now go build me a nice house".

I mean, you know as well I do that if something were to be created from that it would not be considered worthy of being a house. This analogy explains the same reason why most men have no idea on how to attract women!

It is only after being rejected, turned down and hung up enough times do most men kind of stumble their way into some sort of method where they think they are able to get women. This is after years of heart break, trial and error learning and receiving other demoralizing experiences. Plus it's not guaranteed to actually get you anywhere. Also, it's only the few lucky ones who are able to somewhat figure out a sort of "method" to all that madness!

I know myself that I had to learn the hard way. It was not until my late teens till I was able to somehow convince a girl to date me. What was worse is - I didn't even like her. In fact, I think I just settled with her, because well frankly, she didn't say no! It was after years of being in that relationship where I didn't have any feelings for her did I realize that I needed to work on my situation with women. That's when I started the soul searching journey and started to learn how to attract women on the internet - just like you guys are doing right now.

There is so much stuff out there on the internet that it is quite confusing. In fact, it is VERY confusing and it took me a long time to figure out what actually works and what doesn't. The good news is, I FOUND SOMETHING THAT WORKS!

1. You need to let her know that you are interested in being more than just a friend - I find it interesting that a lot of guys think it's ok to just be friends with a woman first and attempt to seduce her later. I'm afraid that's not the case.

2. You need to show her that you have higher social status than her - this is very important. Women are automatically attracted to men who show higher social value. For example, they like rockstars and rich men because these guys are perceived to have higher social value.

But what if you're not rich or famous? You can still act like you are cooler than her by not whining and begging for her attention.
3. You need to show her that you are a challenge - It is human nature to not value something we get easily. That's why if she wants something from you, you should always ask for something in return, but in a playful manner.

We know from the statistics on women's involvement on boards and the number who have achieved CEO status in their organisations, to mention just two indicators, that there are many barriers to women growing and advancing their careers as they would like. Women Having Children and Caring For Them.

Certainly having children and caring for them is a significant issue for us as women. Knowing what the progression is in our organisation or industry and getting in line, in the pipeline, is something to which many of us don't pay sufficient attention. What has to be done to advance our careers is something men make a priority of knowing, often from the moment they join a company. They then commit considerable energy and time to making it happen. We, as women, often look on with either amusement or derision at how blatantly they do it, yet they get the promotions and we don't! Women who are in the pipeline can sometimes lose their position because of their family commitments. Even three months maternity leave may see us miss a promotion because we weren't there when it came up.

Women Not Knowing The "Rules of The Game".

Aligned with our attitudes and socialisation are some styles of communication that we, as women, favour that also don't help us advance our careers. We tend to favour consensus in decision-making but often over-consult and are then seen to be indecisive and unable to make the hard calls. We favour team work and attribute the success to the team, making our leadership of the team invisible to those who make the decisions about advancement. We tend to be unassertive (confusing it with aggression) and ask permission and apologise often instead of assertively expressing our ideas and intentions. We express ideas as questions, rather than be seen to be putting ourselves forward. There are styles of communication that are highly valued in leadership and management today that women are very good at. We need to fine tune those styles and divest ourselves of those that are part of a past that is no longer relevant to the world in which we are professionally working.

Women's Difficulty with Self-Promotion.

Many of us find it difficult to promote ourselves, our talents and our potential. Even highly successful women, when asked what challenges them most, have acknowledged that they find self-promotion difficult. We need to take much more seriously the importance of consciously building a platform, profile and reputation for ourselves. This is our personal brand.

Women Not Utilising Networking Both Within and Without The Organisation.

In my work with women over many years I have found that many women tend to believe that you advance your career and attain leadership positions by working hard, making a 150% commitment to your organisation, gaining qualifications, getting coaching behind the scenes to improve performance and giving loyalty. Men, on the other hand, believe that your career is advanced by who you are close to, by knowing the right people. They devote significant amounts of time to developing these relationships through networking. They meet the "right" people, get the "right" introductions and belong to the "right" organisations. They take leadership positions on the "right" committees and build their reputation and profile in their industry or professional sector. Women don't generally value the importance of networking to their career advancement and therefore do not utilise it well.

More often than not there is a combination of these barriers creating obstacles for any individual woman. There are, however, always ways through, over and under those barriers, but everything comes at a price. Once we understand what's involved, we can then decide whether we want to pay the price. We can also be inspired by those women who have found creative ways to be who they want to be and achieve what they want to achieve.

The first time I participated in a triathlon, I wanted to stop. As I plowed up hills (who picked this course?) on my heavy mountain bike, women who passed me would encourage me on and yell "you go girl"! As I ran--no, plodded--down the trail, sometimes slowing to a walk, the women coming from the other direction would cheer me on telling me I didn't have much further to go.

And as I finally and unbelievably crossed the finish line, those who finished earlier stood around the finish line hooting and rooting for those of us bringing up the rear. I wanted to stop, but they weren't going to let me. The support and companionship of a womens triathlon is an incredible push, especially for beginner triathletes.

When organized triathlons were first held in the 1970's, the competitors, male or female, were often hard-core athletes who were previously competitors in college swimming, distance biking or marathons. Triathlon participants were looking to be the fastest and garner a spot on the podium.

But there was another breed of competitor, especially among women: an "ordinary" female who enjoyed being active and liked a challenge. These were the women who started organizing triathlon events specifically for women that weren't just about winning, but meeting the challenge and enjoying the effort.

The first womens triathlons were being organized in the US and Australia in the late 80s and early 90's. Now womens triathlons like the Danskin Triathlon Series boast some of the greatest participation rates in the world. In 19 years that the Danskin series has been around, it has grown from 450 women participating in three events to 25,000 women swimming, cycling and running in eight races in different cities.

Other womens triathlons have since been created like the larger Luna All-Women's Triathlon and Irongirl Series all the way to smaller local womens triathlon events. There is probably a women's triathlon held in a city not far from you.

If you take the 23 May 2008 figure, of 304,153,715 people, in the United States, it means that at least 20,276,914 Americans, will be sentenced to a term behind bars, during their lifetime (U.S. Census Bureau, 2008). It is common knowledge, that the majority of the prison population, consists of African American males, but, the reality is, that women of all ages and races, are included in these numbers (Bartollas, 2002).

This is why, the most alarming statistic, is the growth of the women's prison population. The Women in Prison Project, developed by the New York Correctional Association, has published a fact sheet, demonstrating that the number of women in New York prisons alone, increased by 645 percent between the years of 1973 to 2007 (this is not a typo).

Truthfully, this is more than a drastic increase, which supports the contention that this has become a critical women's issue, in today's world. These women are daughters, sisters, wives, and most importantly they are also mothers, who are trying to raise their children, many of them alone. This fact adds to the crisis of the issue; where do these children go when their mother is arrested and incarcerated?

Logically, many of these children will go to the parents of the women, who are arrested. Unfortunately, these are the same parents that abused or neglected the mother, sending her into early parenthood, confusion, low self esteem, and drug use/abuse, to nullify the pain of her childhood memories (Kail & Cavanaugh, 2007). Now these displaced children, will face the same dysfunctional situations that their mother's faced, as they grew up (Kail & Cavanaugh, 2007).

Why do the courts believe that a person, who failed their own child, will succeed with a grandchild? Ideally, these grandparents have matured, learned from their errors, and improved their parenting skills, before their grandchildren are placed in their home.

However, many of them have not changed, and still exhibit the same dysfunctional parenting methods, they used with their own child (Kail & Cavanaugh, 2007). Consequently, the courts must develop a follow up system, to consistently monitor these displaced children, if a repeat of the problems that led the mother to her criminal activities is to be avoided.

The Women In Prison Project, reports that more than 70 percent, of these women are incarcerated for non-violent, drug or property crimes; rather than for a violent, life threatening offense (2007). Consequently, these women are not a danger to the community, in reality; they are more of a danger to themselves, and the children they are trying to bring up, with or without, their fathers.

Rather than putting these women into cages, and putting the children into risky situations, including foster care, or group homes; it makes more sense, to provide education, vocational training, life, and parenting skills, to insure their success as parents, and productive members of the community (Kail & Cavanaugh, 2007).

Unfortunately, the prison system today, does none of these things. Today's prisoners, are warehoused and contained, until their release date, at which point they are returned to society, many of them with no supervision of any kind.

It is to this end, that prisoner release and after-care programs are critical. It is difficult to understand, how society seems to expect that upon release from prison, these women are going to be miraculously cured; no longer suffering from drug dependency or low self esteem issues.

Society appears to imagine, that these women, will suddenly have the skills, to insure that they can obtain the kind of productive employment that was not available to them, when they were arrested and convicted. Does society truly believe that the punishment of living behind bars, where the women will be faced with unimaginable trauma, and isolation; will suddenly eliminate all of the pain, memories, trials, and tribulations that they endured in their childhood; and that they will miraculously become productive adults when the prison gates swing open? It is said that the true test of sanity is when a person continues to do the same thing but expects a different result each time.

Is this not what is happening, when society continues to incarcerate offenders, teaches them nothing, and then releases them back into society in the same or worse condition, than they were in at the time of their first arrest?

Taking a look at what changes, when a woman is sentenced to prison, might help answer some of these questions? The reality is, they lose their children, their homes, any job they might have had, and any property they might have owned, and then they experience isolation, greater than most people, can even imagine (Bartollas, 2002).

It is difficult, at best, to imagine the brutality, loneliness, and sense of loss that a woman faces, when they are incarcerated (Bartollas, 2002). Does it really make sense to believe that these things will cure addiction, provide education and life skills, or teach quality parenting skills to these women? No! Sentencing someone to serve time in a prison facility, does nothing to create rehabilitation, or produce restitution, to their victim (Bartollas, 2002).

It does provide them with very valuable lessons, in cruelty, better criminal methodology, and creates an anger that is often vented on the children, that they reclaim upon their release (Roberts, 2005). What this does is create yet another generation of American's who will turn to drugs, alcohol, and violence to shield themselves from their painful past.

Why does this matter? Many more children are affected, displaced, and separated from their custodial parent, when a woman goes to prison, than when a man is sentenced to serve time (NY Correctional Association, 2007). The Women In Prison Project states, that only about "44 percent of the men who are incarcerated actually lived with their children, at the time of their arrest" (NY Correctional Association; pg.1, 2007). It is not a good situation, for the children of any convicted felon, but more children are affected by the imprisonment of a mother, than by the incarceration of a father (NY Correctional Association, 2007).

Regardless of whether the child's mother or father is incarcerated, these children develop their own unique set of childhood issues, because of that incarceration (Siegel & Welsh, 2005). Studies have demonstrated that children, whose father is incarcerated, often try to follow in their father's footsteps, because, they believe that serving time in prison, is a normal part of becoming a man (Siegel & Welsh, 2005).

When a single or custodial mother is incarcerated, not only does the child suffer the loss of a male role model, but they also suffer the loss of their security, nurturing, and most often their primary caregiver (Siegel & Welsh, 2005). The good news is that when the sentence is served, and their parent is released, many of these children are returned to that parent, and everything will be alright, from then on, right? WRONG! Not only, does the child have a new set of issues and problems, they must learn to cope with; the incarcerated parent has suffered the indignities of living in a cage.

This often leads to even worse anger issues, which can lead to a return to drug use/abuse and their previous criminal behaviors are subsequently repeated, and may lead to another arrest and period of incarceration (Bartollas, 2002).

There are two ways to earn a release from prison. One way, is to serve the bulk of the time a person is sentenced to, and then earn a release without any supervision, assistance, or support (Bartollas, 2002). Many offender's feel that this is the better way, because, they are not placed under the control of a parole officer (Bartollas, 2002). The other way to earn a release from prison is to qualify for an early release, called parole (Bartollas, 2002).

When an offender is released on parole, ideally they are supported by their parole officer as they reintegrate into the community. The parole officer's intentions are supposed to be, community safety, and insuring a successful return to society, while providing assistance, guidance, and supervision to their clients (Bartollas, 2002). In this way, the system helps to keep the community safe, while reducing the overwhelming prison population (Bartollas, 2002).

Today, however, it appears that many parole officers are so overloaded that simple supervision is nearly all they can manage (Bartollas, 2002). These heavy caseloads create the need for the officer to put in inhumane hours, causing exhaustion and leading to distraction, rather than assistance for their clients (Bartollas, 2002).

Consequently, instead of working with their charges; the parole officer, may appear to be, more interested in finding a technical violation, that will allow them to return their charge to prison, thereby reducing their caseload (Bartollas, 2002). To this end, some parole officers, appear to be very strict, with their clients, even insisting that they take any available employment, regardless of whether it provides sufficient income to support the family or not.

Whether an offender serves the bulk of their sentence, and earns an unsupervised release, or is released on parole, there is little, if any help available for them in the community (Bartollas, 2002). If the released offender does not have family waiting, and willing to take them in, and give them a place to live, they could be in serious trouble. Most offenders are released, with a "kick out" fund, of one hundred dollars.

They are expected to make this money last; until they find a job, shelter, food, and clothing and to support their daily needs, until they can earn their first paycheck. Anyone who has paid a month rent, gone grocery shopping recently, or tried to get a telephone and electricity turned on, knows how impossible it is to survive, for even one week, let alone the standard two weeks, to a first paycheck, on one hundred dollars. It simply cannot be done.

Consequently these released offenders are often expected to live in homeless shelters, seek assistance on the street, beg for change, or stand in line at a soup kitchen, just to eat, until they can find work, and earn a paycheck. Not to mention that finding work, with the label of "felon," is harder than just finding work, in today's unstable economy.

How is this mother supposed to reclaim her children when she cannot care for her own needs? How does she shelter and feed them, even if she can get them back? What choice does she have? Many times the only choice that these women see is to return to their criminal activity, and the cycle begins again.

How does society expect these women to be proper mothers, care for their children, and stay away from the drugs that numb the feelings of hopelessness and loss when they face these conditions upon their release?

If there is any hope of keeping these women from just returning to the life of drugs, abuse, and crime that they were living when they were arrested, there has to be a program designed to keep them free.

This program must teach them basic life skills, educate them, show them ways to earn a living that does not involving criminal activity, and teach them how to handle the responsibilities of parenting, so that their own children do not follow in their footsteps.

This is a serious women's issue requiring immediate attention. Everyone must become involved in the community corrections programs, donate their time and services to mentor and teach these women a better way. Without programs of this nature there will never be any hope, of dropping the currently out of control rate of incarceration; of America's daughters, sisters, wives, and mothers.

Supporting community corrections, lobbying for better community assistance programs, and helping after-care facilities to acquire the funding and the residences needed to help these women is a full time job for many, and there is still not enough help to make any difference. This article is a challenge to all women, can you help? Can you give a few hours a day to mentor another woman, can you teach someone how to work in a productive environment, or can you teach cooking and parenting skills? If so, then yes, you can help.

Bridge To Tomorrow, Inc. is a fledgling aftercare facility, located in Fort Myers, Florida. They hope to provide housing for released offenders, who will pay rent by helping to provide upkeep and maintenance on the property for the first few months, and then pay a reduced rate rental after that. They want to provide courses in life skills, budgeting, parenting, and simple survival skills to released offenders, so that there is some hope of preventing them from a need to return to criminal behavior.

In addition, Bridge To Tomorrow, Inc. hopes to fund scholarships, provide job skills, and even plans to provide a list of employers, who are willing to hire ex-offenders prior to their release from prison, so that the offender has a job, starting the day after their release. Finally, it is important that there are crisis intervention services, mental health services, and drug and alcohol counseling, available to these released offenders. These services are critical so that their transition back into the community, and their transformation to a productive member of society, can be completed with the least amount of trauma possible.

The Culprit on Women Smoking?

Recently I read a report titled "Women and Smoking" published by The Non Smokers' Movement of Australia. It mentioned: "While the prevalence of smoking amongst women is still below that for males, the difference between the two groups has considerably narrowed in recent years.

This is because men's smoking rates have declined by more than 50% since 1945 (down from 72% to the present rate of 32.1%). Female smokers, on the other hand, appear to have been less influenced by anti-smoking messages." Among the factors quoted in the report which have an impact on women smoking are marital status, employment status, occupational status and the relationship between the level of education attained.

However, from a non smoker perspective of whom I am, I believe there are definitely other factors at play, two that I can think of, one is attributed to "Advertising" and the other is "Men".

The reason I am on this opinion is that women smoke because of the way cigarettes are advertised and where they are shown. Women smoke also because they believe smoking will make them act, look, and feel differently.

You will notice cigarette ads when targeted towards women always promote slimness. And if I am not mistaken, six years after Virgina Slims were introduced, twice as many women were seen smoking.

There this kind of cigarette ads will make women think that by smoking, they can become thin, sexy and healthy. Further all smoking ads are set in places with clean, wholesome settings, can you find any ads show people with stained teeth, wrinkled faces, and a large cloud of smoke hovering over heads?

The other reason why I feel is attributed to men is because cigarettes have always been attributed to class and intellect associated with men which men use to portray strength. Hence, the phenomenon of fairer sex in a way has not shy women away from smoking, as women also deem this as a perfect portrayal of women's attitude and strength. For example, cigarettes, also known as the stress sticks, are no longer the domain of the male.

The answer to whether advertising or men is the culprit and which one the more dominant factor, i.e. "The Culprit on Women Smoking", I would say is subject to much debate and further survey, right?

What is needed now is to curb the epidemic of smoking and its related diseases throughout the world. Some measures which could be taken include:

Increase awareness of the impact of smoking on women's health - The media, broadcast authority and women's magazines should play an important role in raising women's awareness of the magnitude of the impact of smoking on their health. For instance, women have to aware that lung cancer is not the only concern, others ensuing such as cardiovascular, health effects on pregnancy, pulmonary, and other life threatening diseases as well.
Increase the awareness to counter the tobacco industry's targeting of women - Get women aware that tobacco industry's sponsorship of women's activities such as in sports, in professional and leadership organizations, its support to curb domestic violence against women, and so on is actually an attempt to associate itself with things women most value. Such associations should be decried for what they are, i.e. attempts to position itself as an ally of women's causes and thereby to silence potential critics.
Recognize that nonsmoking is by far the norm among women - The fact that almost all women have either rejected smoking for themselves or, if they do smoke now, wish to quit, should be promoted aggressively through various means, one of them could be a more vocal constituency related to women and smoking
Encourage the reporting of gender-specific results from studies of factors influencing smoking behavior, smoking prevention and cessation, and the health effects of tobacco use. This reporting will provide additional evidence to help women aware as well as suggest important gender differences exist in the appeal and use of such products, and the health consequences of their use. In a way this will help women to better understand the disparities in smoking prevalence among different groups and sexes, further defined by socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation. In short, it helps to tackle issues such as how can the decline in smoking among women who are less well educated be accelerated, how to disassociate cigarette smoking from progress in achieving gender equity and so on.
To arrest the smoking prevalence among women - What is already known about effective means of tobacco control at the societal level should be disseminated throughout the world as soon as possible to prevent the increase in the level of smoking among women worldwide.
Encourage and make aware of the importance to support and participate in the World Health Organization's Framework Convention for Tobacco Control (FCTC) to government of every country - That FCTC is an international legal instrument designed to curb the global spread of tobacco use through specific protocols, which cover tobacco pricing, smuggling, advertising and sponsorship, and many other related activities.

Women at Work

Women in the workplace. For some reason this remains a contentious topic no matter what the work. It seems that neither men nor women can get past their differences, accept that people are people regardless of sex, or work in environments of mutual respect.

Ever since World War II, when industries were 'forced' to accept women in the work place, special considerations based on 'feminine' psychology have been made for women at work. Instead of making the transition easier, the adopted principles made working conditions harder for women and are still felt to this day.

In July 1943, Transportation Magazine wrote an article containing 11 tips designed to help supervisors get the most out of the feminine workforce. The article is shockingly laughable, but also frightening as many of the misconceived ideas from 60 years ago still dominate some male mindsets.

For example, tip no. 3 states that it's better to hire "husky" (read slightly overweight) girls because they are more even tempered and efficient than the skinny variety.

Many people, of both genders, still believe that attractive women, who take pride in their appearance, are somehow more vacuous than plainer looking women. It's supposed that pretty 'girls' are so concerned with their looks that all else pales in significance. The biggest tragedy in life is a broken nail, closely followed by a bad hair day (it could be the other way round).

Conversely, women who don't take pride in their appearances and who don't make an effort in their grooming are considered to be slovenly. If they don't care about their looks, how can they care about anything else? Where is the happy medium? I'd be interested to know if there is one.

Men still believe that women use their looks to obtain promotions and salary increases. A recent article on askmen.com stated that making eye contact and wearing revealing attire is simply a means to an end for some females. At least the writer, Armando Gomez, qualified the sentence with the word 'some' and didn't paint all women with his misguided brush.

An attractive, friendly female colleague is seen as a flirt who shamelessly uses her feminine wiles to get ahead, while a plainer colleague, who is just as friendly, is one of the guys.

What is worse than men believing that women flaunt their looks as a self-marketing strategy is the fact that many women subscribe to that way of thinking. Reactions to news of a colleague's promotion include extensive debate on who she slept with to secure the position and how long she'll last now that her abilities will be tested with new responsibilities.

There is an abundance of literature on the topic, available both in print and online. Feminist writers have covered it extensively; men have written about their perspective of the feminisation of the workplace; women have tried to write from a male point of view and men have tried to write with women in mind.

Gomez attempts the latter in his article on askmen.com. He tries to point out all the obstacles that women have to overcome in order to succeed. All that he really creates, however, is a condescending tone and the impression that he doesn't fully understand the subject.

He contends that women develop dual personalities: a work personality that is flirtatious, bubbly and designed to garner respect and acceptance, and more serious (he says normal) personality for home. As a working woman, working with other women I feel the need to say, "Huh?' Maybe I've just worked in good companies, but I've never felt the need to disassociate myself to such a degree to gain recognition for my abilities.

No one is ever truly him or herself at work. Business environments require a certain amount of decorum that our personal lives do not. But men also have to adapt to their work situations. To imply that only women develop professional schizophrenia is grossly irresponsible and inaccurate, not to mention offensive and discriminatory.

Gomez compounds his sins by drawing a table that he feels highlights the different behaviours of men and women at work. Some points of interest include his allegation that women are usually well prepared, while men tend to cobble bits of information together at the last minute.

He also says that women make an effort to keep up to date on industry-related information, while men are happy to make things up on the spot rather than admit ignorance on a subject.

His generalisations about men are slanted to make them resemble badly performing monkeys, while women are depicted as being patient, and glowing pinnacles of virtue. I don't know where he got his information from, but I question the source. Personality types are not gender specific, neither is life that simple or easily delineated.

Attitudes towards women at work have come a long way since 1943, when it was considered good advice to have a physician examine prospective female employees. This was deemed necessary to determine which inherent female weaknesses were present to render her mentally and physically unfit for employment. Unfortunately, articles such as Mr Gomez's prove just how far we've yet to go.

Violence Against Women, In War And In Peace

What is the difference... between a war zone and the situation faced by a female student walking across campus to reach her university library after dark? The similarities between the two [are] striking. A woman walking across her university campus... faces the prospect of immediate injury or death... Why is only one of these scenarios normally described as a war zone? - Thom Workman (1995, 1-2)

Recently, I asked my wife what it was that made her feel uncomfortable about walking alone from our university campus to our home at night. When I asked, we were returning from a dinner date, and we had been light-heartedly joking about some of the evening's activities.

As soon as I asked the question, however, her demeanor instantly changed from light and playful to heavy and serious; she answered me in a nervous tone. She explained that she always called me for a ride or to walk her home because she did not feel safe walking down the dark, shrub-lined pathways that lead to our home without anyone nearby for protection. I pressed her for more explanation, and she replied that, if she actually were to be attacked, she would have no recourse for protection.

She could not expect that anyone would hear or respond to a cry for help in that part of campus, she could not likely outrun an attacker, especially since she is currently pregnant, and she is too small to defend herself physically from a male attacker.

My wife's responses to my question, and especially the emotions that showed on her face while she talked, opened my eyes to the rawness and truthfulness of the fear that she feels. Men often hear women speak about the difficulties that they face in dark, isolated places, when they are on their own, but it is hard for most men to comprehend exactly why women have those feelings because they are so different from the things that men experience.

Her feelings of fear and anxiety give credence to the observations that Thom Workman makes in his paper, "The Hidden Agenda of Mars: Race, Class, and Gender in Contemporary War" (Workman 2005). In his paper, Workman equates the "threat of injury and death, the preoccupation with survival... the forging of special reliances, rising anxiety, [and] stress" that characterize the feelings of men and women trapped in war zones with the feelings that female university students, like my wife, feel when they must walk alone in the dark (Workman 2005, 2). He argues that, since people in both situations have the same negative feelings, the practical difference between the two is, at least in this case, unimportant.

Workman's larger point, however, is that women are specially exposed to violence in both war and peace because violence is an inherent and fundamental part of the sociocultural practices enshrined in the patriarchal world system (Workman 2005, 5). This feminist perspective on war and violence, as he describes it, is that there is a tendency for patriarchal violence to focus on women because women are largely absent, even invisible, to security planners and to governments in general.

This invisibility is rooted in the masculine ideal of security, and it is not an aberration that exists outside of the societal fabric. Rather, it is an integral part of what the leaders, and even the citizens of patriarchal societies understand to be normal and acceptable.

In Carol Cohn's article, Sex and Death in the Rational World of Defense Intellectuals, she takes this idea a bit further. She analyzes the significance of the pervasive sexual metaphors in the language of the defense community, and specifically in the area of nuclear deterrence. In her estimation, the specialized, sexual language of the defense community "both reflects and shapes the nature of the American nuclear strategic project" (Cohn 1987, 690).

In other words, it is largely impossible to comprehend the culture and ethos of the defense community in non-sexual terms. Further, Cohn makes the argument that sexual metaphors and sexist language play "a central role in allowing defense intellectuals to think and act as they do," and that feminists have to carefully choose their words in order to speak to the right audience (Cohn 1987, 690).

She feels that the men of the defense community would not be able to comprehend the feminist ideas of security because these ideas are readily expressible in the normal vernacular of the defense industry.

The effect of Cohn's argument is to strengthen the idea that Workman referred to when he proposed that war, and violence in general, are inherent parts of patriarchal systems. The same language the men use to talk about sex and sexuality in everyday life is applied to discussions about missiles and tactics.

Violence and sexuality are inextricably linked in the defense world (Cohn 1987, 692-693), because the defense community, like every other segment of society, is dominated by patriarchy and mostly closed to the meaningful participation of women.

The consequences of the masculinization of the defense community are similar to the consequences of ignoring women in other aspects of society. In development, the outdated policies that excluded women from their calculations resulted in inefficient practices and failed efforts (Man-made Famine 1986). In what amounts to a terrible irony, women are usually the most adversely affected portion of society when development and reform measures fail (Cornwall 2003).

Similarly, in the defense establishment, the decisions about when to go to war, what weapons to use, what tactics to follow, and who to identify as the enemy are all made without taking the female perspective into consideration. Women are invisible in defense circles, inasmuch as their perspective is ignored, and their invisibility results in egregious problems like the official policies of some militaries that advocate the use of rape as a weapon (Bumiller 1999, Kristof 1995, Mydans 2001, Sanger 1992, Shapiro 1995, Simons 2001a, 2001b, and Tetreault 1995).

It can also result in abysmal security situations that make rape a common and poorly prosecuted crime (Makiya 1993, Polgreen 2005, and Sengupta 2003), and in a warped view of women that equates motherhood and maternal duty with martyrdom and murder (Bennet 2002a, 2002b, and McGirk 2007). Thus, the masculinization of the defense establishment all around the world makes women a special target of violence during times of conflict.

Violence against women in society in general, even during times of peace, is rooted in the same problems that motivate violence against them in times of conflict: patriarchal dominance, sexualized language, and female invisibility. Women are special targets of violence because of their uniquely vulnerable position in society; the structure of most societies ingrains the second class status of women into the male and female psyches from birth to death, and their second class status makes women more likely to become victims of violence, because it renders them the least able to influence society through politics or law.

Like in times of conflict, rape is one of the primary manifestations of violence against women in times of peace. Even in peace, the military is often the culprit, as evidenced by the problems that young women of Amazonian tribes face when Brazilian soldiers are stationed near their villages. The young women are wooed by the Brazilian soldiers, who offer the girls and their families food and other supplies.

The soldiers then impregnate the girls, leaving their families and villages with ethnically mixed children that may or may not be loyal to the community when they are grown (Rohter 2002). United Nations peacekeepers have been the perpetrators of similar crimes in other parts of the world (Associated Press 2005, and Hoge 2005), just as American soldiers have been in Japan (Associated Press 2000a, and Pollack 1996), and even in the US Air Force Academy (Janofsky 2003).

More frequently, though, the perpetrators of violence against women in times of peace are not soldiers. The cultural attitudes that dictate what makes a woman a "good woman" in most societies make it difficult for women to get help when rape occurs, and even more difficult to get a conviction against their attackers.

The societal barriers that prevent women from bringing their attackers to justice make rape a relatively low risk crime for the rapist. The shame of having been raped is projected onto the victim's family, not just onto her own person, and in some cultures the victim is often murdered in an "honor killing," or forced to take her own life in an "honor suicide," because her death is perceived to bring back the lost family honor (Associated Press 2000b, Bilefsky 2006, and Bumiller 1999).

This attitude is not limited to the third world or to ultra-conservative religious societies; it is alive and well even in the first world, even in the United States. Even I, as a white Christian male, can understand, to a small degree, the stigma of being a victim of crime, though not sexual crime. When I was in middle school I was mugged, and my coat and backpack were stolen. For reasons that remain inexplicable to me to this day, I was too ashamed to tell my parents about the mugging.

After a few days of questioning me about what happened to my things, they finally got the information out of me. I can only imagine how terrible the shame of victimization must be for women who are raped or otherwise abused. In my case, it was a rather irrational shame that kept me silent. In the case of abused women, the societal taboos that surround sex and abuse, the fear of being rejected by family and friends, and the inherent difficulty and emotional pain involved in getting a conviction in rape cases constitute a very real and very rational sense of shame.

Despite the obvious fact that the victim is not at fault, she is likely to be perceived as being "dirty" or as having "asked for it" by dressing immodestly or walking alone in the dark, as if those factors give attackers a right to force themselves on the women (Magowan 2002). Indeed, the stigma attached to victims of sexual assault is so great, even in America, that for every one hundred reported rapes, only five rapists are ever convicted of their crimes.

That statistic does not even include the unreported rapes, which surely outnumber those that are reported (Magowan 2002). The shame of having been victimized compels many women to remain invisible and hide the crimes committed against them, which in turn lowers the cost of committing such crimes and encourages rapists to victimize other women.

Thus, regardless of whether a woman lives in a country blessed with peace or cursed with war, she must face equivalent dangers. In order to make women safe, the stigma of victimization must be removed from cultural attitudes, and the plight of women must become visible to the population at large.

Only when women are not in constant danger will they be able to enjoy the full benefits of living in peaceful, prosperous societies. It is a shame that half the population cannot fully experience the sense of security that should come from living outside of a war zone.

Have you thought about starting a women's group? Maybe you stop yourself because you don't know where to begin or have some idea but can't seem to find the time to organize the group. It does take some time to organize the group - though not as much as you may think - and the benefits all the women in the group receive are significant.

Women seem to naturally come together to share everyday activities. Life is easier when you can shop, exercise or share a problem with a friend. So creating a group around a specific topic feeds us emotionally.

We have different relationships in our lives, all of which are important. Yet it's the women in our lives who add silly laughter, endless hours of conversation, caring for us when we are ill, and a loving ear when we are hurting. Are you more relaxed with your women friends?

We started our women's group 11 years ago with the vision that women know how to naturally brainstorm and help each other problem solve. We meet once a month over dinner and the hostess picks a topic for the evening, usually around self-help.

In the past, we've had psychic readings and massages, too. After 11 years, we have a special bond with each other. We've shared problems, joys, celebrations and grandchildren. More importantly, we have each grown because of our consistent connections with each other and the topics that we have chosen to discuss.

There is a coming crisis regarding womens issues on aging and their financial future. "Nations of the world face the challenges of helping aging women attain economic security and promoting the productive potential of woman as they grow old." An International Report Prepared for the United Nation Second World Assembly on Aging.

The purpose of this article is to explore some of the economic issues facing women as they age. Is there a solution to these issues?

What are the key points of concern for women of the baby boomer generation?

In 2004, the average income for a single woman age 65 and older was $9,430 a year. In the United States, approximately 70% of older households have annual incomes below $35,000. Almost 30% of those households have incomes between $10,000 and $20,000. The highest rates of poverty are found among older single women, a category that includes widows and divorced women as well as those who never married.
In 2003, 3.4 million Americans age 65 and over live below the poverty level, 71% were women. About 3.6 million elderly persons (10.1%) were below the poverty level in 2005. This change in the poverty rate was not statistically different from the poverty rate in 2004. Another 2.3 million or 6.6% of the elderly were classified as "near-poor" (income between the poverty level and 125% of this level). Older men were much more likely to be married than older women, 72% of men, 42% of women in 2005. 43% of all older women in 2004 were widows.
For one out of four of these women, social security was their only source of income. As primary caregivers of the house, they contribute less to their social security, and are generally paid less when they do work. Many of the widest pay gaps occur in the best-paid jobs with the most highly educated workers. Among physicians and surgeons, the highest-paid occupation for men and women, women earned 63% of what men did. This was the same ratio for female and male CEOs. Half of older women age 75 and older live alone. By 2020, this total will be 13.3 million and 45% of these women living alone are poor or near poor. (same article as above). The number of childless women has grown to an alarming rate - there will be no one to care for these women in their old age. The average American life expectancy in 2003 was 77.6 years. (80.1 women and 74.8 men) Women live longer than men by an average of 5.3 years. This means that about 85% of women die alone - either unmarried, divorced, or widowed.
New vulnerabilities concerning standard of living in retirement: Declining stock prices after the crash of the high-tech sector in 2000 pushed many pension plans into deficit status and undermined the value of individual retirement savings.

For many women, facing the "golden" years is going to be difficult. Lack of planning and changing economic status will have them in a financial .

What are the Possibilities?

The number of women-owned businesses in this country grew at twice the rate of all firms between 1997 and 2002, jumping 14 percent to 6.2 million, according to the Center for Women's Business Research. Women-owned businesses account for 28 percent of all privately-owned businesses, and employ 9.2 million people.

Aging baby boomers will lead a surge in start-ups that will accelerate the economys recovery. The number of self-employed 55 and older entrepreneurs has increased 18% from 1994 - December, 2003. These senior entrepreneurs now represent 28.7% of all self employed workers, the highest percentage among all age groups, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. These "seniorpreneurs" will be major employers of other aging boomers like themselves, ensuring that the unemployment rate among older workers will continue to remain the lowest of all age groups.

To a lot of boomers, retirement means continuing to work in their own way and reinventing themselves.

They say attractiveness resides on a subtle layer just below the surface of your skin but so does "not attractive."

I have written many articles on what women find attractive in men and how to become attractive to women but it is equally important to know what turns women off. So feel free to do some soul-searching, you just might be turning the women off without even knowing it.

1. The Naïve Romantic

You have this jaded idealized perception of women that is a result of limited personal experience and self-imposed ignorance. You are constantly on the look out for that "perfect" woman or throwing yourself at women who are obviously not into you or presenting some kind of idealized version of you that you think will meet her notion of "ideal" man -and no one is buying.

For some reason most women prefer men with a more realistic perception and a little bit more experience with the opposite sex - and they can tell within the first few seconds of meeting you.

2. The Need-To-Know Addict

You are constantly trying to find out what women want, why women do this, why they react like this, why they say this and why they do that. You are so obsessed with trying to figure out women that if there was a door marked "Hot Women" and a door marked "Lecture About Hot Women" you'd line up for the lecture.

And even when you meet women instead of engaging them and having a real conversation you start asking them "What do women really want?", "Why women like bad boys?" or "why do women shave their legs?". Women look at you like "do I look like a dating coach to you?"

3. The Superficial Air- Head

You are obsessed with the physical and phony aspects of a woman and reject potential relationships with good women for sadly shallow reasons like not big enough boobs, not bootilicious enough, not long enough legs or hair etc.

You move from big boobs to bigger boob or smaller butt to a bigger one with no real and meaningful emotional connection with the women you meet or have a relationship with.

4. The Sexually Invisible-Man

If sexual energy were measured in terms of light, you are generating at the level of a 20watt bulb. You may have the looks, the clothes, the car and even the job and money but that's it - no sexual vibes coming from you.

Women walk past you into the arms of the next jerk who is nowhere as good looking, educated or "sensitive" as you are. You are just not there - nonexistent sexually.

5. The Wet Blanket

You see yourself as a professional, business person, a politician, an activist, a teacher, a doctor, a parent, etc., but not as a sexual professional, sexual politician, sexual doctor, or even a sexual parent.

You are so paralyzed internally by the pervasive anxiety of putting the "right" front that your interactions with women are like boardroom meetings they'd rather avoid. Your "businesslike" persona comes across as uptight and not much fun to be around.

6. The Sexual Adolescent

You confuse everything with sex and only see women as suppliers of sex. Your interactions with women have only one goal - "what can I get in exchange for sex". And when your sexual needs are not met, you react with the emotional tendencies you learned in childhood and never outgrew--sulking, withdrawal, violence, manipulation, nagging, neediness, clinginess, etc. which turns the women off.

7. The Sophisticated Delusional

You are fully tooled up with the "right" attitude, latest techniques and sociological research about women. You are a smooth talking salesman type, good at presenting rational (and sometimes convincing) arguments. However, you make such a show of yourself that you end up with a reputation as a show-off with no real substance to back up your bragging.

8. The Angry Reject

You have a lot of repressed anger or extreme bitterness over the seemingly endless hoops you have to jump through to get women to notice you. You have a very difficult time accepting that women ultimately can and do say "No" to men.

Your resentment and anger show on your face as a "pinched" look and your body language is a walking neon billboard that says "I hate women". The women give you attitude "we hate you too".

9. The Scared Spectator

You love women and are fascinated by them but you are also so intimidated by them that you are awkward in your one-on-one interactions with them. In fact you are so afraid of women that you've talked yourself into believing that all the women you meet will be hostile to you, and so you don't even try to approach them.

You just watch, admire and lick your wounds (and desires) from a distance. They in turn dismiss you as "lacks confidence".

10. The Village Clown

You get so nervous around women that you can't resist the impulse to resort to clownish behaviour. Some women might find you hilariously entertaining but in general your joker image and penchant for uncontained "humour" does not endear you to the women you want to be in a relationship with.

Most women do not take you seriously - and a majority worry about how they are going to introduce you to their friends and family. Women want a man who can be respected by their friends and family.

The reality is that they'll be women who'll find you not attractive because you are bold, not tall enough, not handsome enough, not rich enough or successful enough and sometimes there is nothing you can do to add a few inches here and more hair there.

But there are many things you can do to become so attractive to women that you will not know what to do with yourself. All you have to do is learn how it's done.

The Greatest Day in History...

Today is the greatest day in the history of the world! That statement sounds optimistic because it sounds promising and it feels good to say it. That statement is often said in the context of today being the first day of the rest of your life and one is appreciative. Such appreciation should never go unattended, as it is real. However that statement is not a statement at all nor is it optimistic. "Today is the greatest day in the history of the world" is not a proclamation of promise. It's a declaration of truth.

The history of the world has been one of women's suppression and struggle and though that still continues, today is better than any other day before. Today, women have power unlike never before and the power grows. Power is not something someone gives you; power is something one must take. Women have taken this power and by way of reasonable measures.

Aristotle believed that at his best, man is the most noblest of all animals but separated from law and justice, he is the worst. Women can never be separated from the laws of nature because it's their birthright and their gift. Women can never be separated from justice because justice begins with the woman. Women have been the victims of misguided laws and malicious injustice.

Today, women have the power to impact the laws and levy justice where justice does not exist. In a civilized society, just laws must not only be prevalent, they must prevail. When women prevail in a society, all those in that society will profit and the society will prevail.

Oftentimes when the subject of women in business is discussed, comparisons with men are made as if men are the barometer for business. This is a false perception and false too is the language. Business is not an entity separated from life; it is an entity encompassed by life. The definitions of a business consists of a line of work, to work, a profession, a job, a trade, a position, a vocation, a field, a calling and a career.

Before today, societies around the globe have claimed that women didn't work and therefore couldn't understand the parameters of "formal" business. This misconception rivals some the largest platitudes in history: the near-sighted earth is flat, the purposeful stork delivers babies and the perforated theory of evolution. The business world has presented itself to women as if it spoke a foreign language on an uncharted map.

But the truth is that the language is fabricated and the world of business operates in a land not unknown to women. By definition, everything women do and have always done is in fact a business. Women have labored the child, harvested the crop, fed the hungry, nursed the needy and educated the willing. All of those are jobs, careers, trades, vocations and callings. Women aren't new to business; they're only new to the financial rewards.

Today, more than ever, women are in the workplace and now own the workplace. Women have always been established in business but now they are in business for profit by way of monetary means. Today over 10 million businesses are owned or controlled by women and those businesses account for over two (2) trillion dollars in sales.

That's an astounding number and a resounding accomplishment when all considerations are factored. This doesn't come as a result of women learning anything new. This is a manifestation of who women already are: industrious, innovative, instinctive and intelligent. The traits of women are not to be compared with that of men, just shared in composition of a more productive and progressive society. Every household around the world that houses women, women manage and most commonly manage well.

The interactive and intuitive management style of women is a prerequisite to a thriving business and a productive workplace environment. Women-owned businesses employ almost 20 million people and steadily rising. No matter the financial compensations, people want to work in a place where they are wanted and needed. People want to feel like they're doing something that matters and their input is valuable.

This is the difference between the cold walls of a house structure and the warmth of a fruitful home. Business isn't cold but people in business can be and therefore the stigma attaches. Inanimate objects and entities have no control over the animate. That's an abdication of responsibility and excuse for not executing the social graces where civility and industry must meet. And in the world of accountability, there can be no room for excuses.

There was a time not long ago when any man in a three-piece suit could qualify for a business loan. Those times are no more, as much money was lost and many laws were circumvented. The measures applied in today's market are far more reasonable and more accessible to female entrepreneurs. Commercial lenders and Venture Capitalists want to see that the company has done its research in that respective field. It's important for them to know that you have experience in this area of expertise.

Another major factor will be how you intend to market the product and what the infrastructure of the company is. As you design your company, research successful companies already in that industry, introduce yourselves to other women in business and network to assist each other. Those around you that make claims of what you can't do must be excluded from your conversations, so that you may focus on the task at hand.

Whether you are single, a single mother or married, taking advantage of free enterprise is the way to independence and interdependence. The success in business that any male has experienced is not because males possess some superior trait over women; it's because men have been the only players. Women can compete in any and every business. It's just a matter of choice and now that choice is yours.

There are many mechanics that will need to be considered but every business is unique and few guidelines are universal. Business plans that include collateral will always have a greater chance for success. If you can include real estate in your proposal, then do so. If your credit or assets are not substantial, then you may design a plan that provides for security such as inventory and a schedule that may include factoring.

There are options available such as equipment leasing and accounts receivables that will keep your company flexible with capital reserves. Each business plan must be specifically designed to suit your needs and the company's industry and location. No one can make these determinations but you and no one can adequately assist you without full disclosure. Explore your options and enlist the services of someone who understands you and your needs.

In business, the blueprint for success has zero to do with gender and everything to do with characteristics. The number one reason most people don't start a business is not because of a lack of money but a conceptual fear. For one to operate a successful business, they must first define what success is in their own terms. The sole reason why the numbers of women-owned businesses aren't more reflective of the population is because they haven't been encouraged to do and supported when doing so.

It's been a blight on the world community and a recessive gene to societal growth. Today we see women straightening that crooked path and every society will become a more powerful force because of it. Yesterday, we gorged the bitterness of bigotry. Today, we taste the fruits of unity and diversity. Today, we plant the untainted seeds of effortless innovation and boundless meritocracy.

Today, little girls and little boys will witness the ubiquitous talents of women in power and exalt their leadership. Young women will know they have they have a reasonable option before them and no law will disallow their choices. It's paramount that not only young women see their defined roles as unrestrained but that young men do and work in concert as we brave a new world. It's true: Today is the greatest day in the history of the world and tomorrow will be even

better.

What Do Women Want?

In many cases, women initially said "...tall, dark & handsome " when we asked, "What do you want in a man?"

However, with a little probing - almost all women said that looks really aren't that important when it comes to choosing a potential boyfriend.

But, what does "Looks really aren't that important" mean?

It means that if a guy is confident, has a good sense of humour and is genuine - most women will give him a chance.

The problem is that most guys refuse to believe it, despite the evidence that we all see everyday, in every country of the world.

That is: Guys of all shapes, sizes, ages and races are dating beautiful women.

What a guy simply needs to do is learn how to be attractive to women.

Following are the top 10 traits that women want in men, listed in order of most preferred by the 6,000+ women we've met so far.

1. CONFIDENCE

2. SENSE OF HUMOUR

90% of women said that they love a guy who could make them laugh, or who has a great sense of humour.

3. GENUINE

This was another big one, with 82% of women searching for a guy who is genuine.

In an attempt to do the right thing, a lot of men will often go out of their way, again and again, to prove how genuine or nice they are.

Examples include: Doing anything and everything to appease a woman, expressing feelings too much and too often, "Just in case she thinks I'm not interested!"

The key is to be genuine, without trying to be a perfect knight in shining armor. A few chinks in your armour is normal, human...and charming.

4. MASCULINE/ ALPHA MALE/ REAL MAN

The old, "I just want a real man" popped up 72% of the time.

5. CONVERSATION SKILLS

This was an interesting find, but makes a lot of sense.

70% of women agree that if a guy can't make confident, fun and interesting conversation, then he'll generally be overlooked or considered as boring.

6. STYLISH / FASHIONABLE.

According to 59% of women, a sense of style is also important.

7. PHYSICALLY GOOD-LOOKING.

As mentioned earlier, the old "Tall, dark and handsome" answer was often given when asked about this. Yet, upon further questioning only 32% of women said that looks were somewhat important.

Even so, you have to remember that what one woman considers physically attractive varies from one to the next.

A lot of guys drag themselves down if they don't have a 'male model look.' But, the reality is that only about 10% of guys actually have a 'male model look'...if that.

If women were only attracted to male models, then there'd be a lot of lonely women out there...or a lot of harems run by very lucky men.

But, that's NOT the way this world works.

Nor is it the way ATTRACTION between men and works.

The next time you're out in public, just take a look at all the 'ordinary-looking' guys who are dating beautiful women.

THAT is real life.

Looks are NOT the most important thing to women, even if you don't want to believe it.

Women's Clothes and How to Dress Casual

When it comes to women's clothes, the definition of casual is open to interpretation as fashion has evolved. What was once considered casual may not be the case today or in the future. However, there are ways to be casual while remaining fashion-conscious with these staples of women's clothing.

The cornerstone of the casual look is denim jeans. They are sturdy yet comfortable and can be stylish, too.

Available in various cuts, styles and materials to flatter any body shape such as boot cut, straight leg, skinny, flared and wide legs are all popular types of cuts and styles. As for material types, pure denim, stretch blends, pre-washed and faded all work well.

Some caveats about jeans, though, are apparent. For example, wearing jeans that are ripped or patched in delicate places should be avoided. A little fashionable wear and tear is still in style, but there is a big difference between fashionably worn and old and ragged.

Now that you've got the bottoms, you need the shirt and nothing is more casual than the versatile t-shirt.

Available in all different colours and sizes, they can be printed with any design imaginable and a t-shirt worn correctly can make you look fabulous, but a step in the wrong direction can make you look frumpy.

When looking at t-shirts, follow the same principles as jeans and try to avoid stained, faded, or ripped t-shirts, or you can wind up in the latter category.

These symptoms will start at different times for each woman and can get worse over time if not addressed and managed with some form of treatment or compensation. It is always best to consult with your physician because vaginal symptoms can be successfully treated but it is as in all things related to menopause, on an individual case by case basis that will determine the best treatment for you.

Your whole reproductive system is affected with menopause because your periods stop. You may experience less lubrication which will probably give you a feeling of vaginal dryness. This is one of the things that can be addressed with supplemental estrogen and/or use of vaginal lubricants.

Identifying The Phases of Menopause

The phases of menopause or the menopausal transition is usually broken down into four categories; pre-menopause, peri-menopause, menopause and post-menopause. The signs and symptoms of menopause experienced by every woman include cessation of menstrual periods and decreased hormone production by the ovaries.

There is a long list of symptoms that may be associated with menopause and decreased hormone production. Not every woman experiences all of them, but most experience one or more.

The average age of menopause is 51, but a woman is only said to have experienced "premature menopause" if it occurs before the age of 40. Premature menopause is usually caused by illness or injury to the ovaries, but premature menopause occurs naturally in about 1% of all women. On the other end of the scale, some women do not enter menopause until they are well into their fifties. There is no way to predict at what age menopause will occur in a specific woman.

The different phases of menopause are experienced by all women, but may not cause any symptoms. During pre-menopause a woman's periods are regular. Symptoms such as worsening PMS, periods that are heavier or lighter than normal may be associated with "peri-menopause" or the time "around" menopause.

Women in their late thirties may experience these symptoms, but may not enter menopause for another ten years. Symptoms such as this can also be caused by other more serious health conditions and sudden changes should be evaluated by a physician.

Menopause is simply a term that means the end of menstruation. When a woman has not had a period for 12 consecutive months, then she can no longer become pregnant. She is post-menopausal. Women may experience the signs and symptoms of menopause for several years before menopause and for several years following menopause. The most common symptoms for which women seek treatment are hot flashes, night sweats and vaginal dryness.

About 50% of all women have hot flashes and/or night sweats during the phases of menopause. About 10% have them in their pre-menopausal years and the percentage gradual increases as menopause approaches. Researchers refer to these symptoms as "vasomotor symptoms", because circulation and blood vessel dilation are involved.

The exact cause of hot flashes and night sweats are unknown. It is known that women who are surgically menopausal, due to removal of the ovaries, typically have more severe vasomotor symptoms.

Men who must take drugs to suppress hormone production also experience hot flashes. All of this seems to indicate that decreased hormone production causes hot flashes. But all women experience a gradual decrease in hormone production, but all do not have hot flashes.
