Can Liposuction Really Help Me Lose Weight?

Liposuction is becoming increasingly popular, fueled in part by new advances in the technique and technologies. Various methods of laser lipo such as SmartLipo, ProLipo, CoolLipo, LipoLite, and LipoTherme have simplified the surgery and made the recovery faster and more comfortable.

However, even though this procedure is extremely common, many people don't fully understand it. One question that many people have is whether or not liposuction is viable as a weight loss method. This article will discuss lipoplasty's relationship to weight loss and will help readers to understand both its strengths and its limitations.

The purpose of liposuction is to remove fat from the body for the purpose of improving one's appearance and comfort. During surgery, doctors use small, hollow needles called cannulas to suction fat from one or a few target areas.

These target areas are chosen beforehand, during consultations between the patient and the surgeon. The target areas need to be anesthetized with localized pain killers. Typically a limited number of body areas are treated during a single surgery. Often, only one area is treated; sometimes a small handful of areas can be treated.

Every area that is treated requires more anesthesia, costs more, and puts an additional strain on the body. Because of this liposuction is most ideal when dealing with a small number of target areas. People interested in serious weight loss typically expect results all over their bodies. This is one reason why suction lipectomy is unsuccessful as a weight loss plan.

Another reason why lipoplasty is far from ideal as a weight loss method is that it can only remove a certain volume of fat at a time. Typically, a single procedure can remove a maximum of 10 pounds of fat.

Doing more than this can result in uneven or unnatural looking results, and it also increases patient trauma. If too much of a patient's fatty tissue is removed at once, the body can believe that it is under attack and react negatively.

Patients can receive work on different body areas sequentially, which can increase the amount of fat that liposuction can remove. However, even if a patient does this, liposuction is still not the ideal for weight loss.

Weight management and weight loss are best performed through a combination of healthy diet and regular exercise. Improvements in diet and exercise will improve a person's appearance and will also offer numerous health benefits that cosmetic surgery alone cannot offer.

Liposuction is most successful when performed on a relatively fit person who has a small number of problem areas where they store unwanted fat. For example, many otherwise fit men carry excess fat around their belly, and many otherwise healthy women carry more weight than they wish on their thighs and hips.

Many men carry excess fat around their chests, leading to the embarrassing problem of "man boobs." Many women find that they gain bulges of fat on their stomach during pregnancy that no amount of exercise can budge. In cases like these, liposuction can be a very good solution. It can help these already healthy people to be happier and more comfortable with their appearance.

If you are considering undergoing a lipoplasty, please consider meeting with a surgeon in your area for a free consultation. Your doctor can help you to know whether or not you would be a good fit for liposuction, and vice-versa.
