Pedicure - Bad For Your Health?

When you go to a salon for a pedicure, you put your health in their hands...in the form of your pretty little feet. Reports have shown that between unsanitary tools and unhealthy techniques, you may get more than you bargained for with your pedi. Follow these pointers to make sure your experience is safe and healthy!

Check for Licensing

Your nail technician should be a trained, licensed professional. Make sure that the establishment and its estheticians have licenses posted in the salon.

Insist that Tools are Sterilized

It's your money and your body, so make sure you let the salon know what you'll pay for, and what you won't stand for. For your safety, tools must be sterilized between each and every use.

Some salons use chemical sterilization techniques while others use heat sterilization, also called autoclaving. With chemical sterilization, the tools should be immersed in the cleaner for a minimum of ten minutes between each customer.

Workstations Should Also Be Cleaned

While you wait for your turn, make sure that the technicians are thoroughly cleaning their work areas between clients. They should use a disinfectant to clean out any whirlpool baths or bowls used for soaking.

Say No to the Cuticle Cutter

These fun little tools have a dangerous side - they often make tiny cuts around the nail bed that allow germs and bacteria to infect the skin. In some states throughout the U.S., cuticle cutters are illegal due to their possible health implications.

Do Your Part to Stop the Spread of Germs

If you have any cuts, scrapes or infections on your feet, reschedule your pedicure. Because of the nature of the business, many parts of nail salons are breeding grounds for bacteria and viruses.
